Mura di Gallieno
(III sec. d.C.)

(III century p.C.)

In the III century, the Roman  Empire was in a crisis and the barbarians were on the border. In 260 the Alemanni reached Ravenna, but the emperor Galliano won in a  battle against them in Milan. After this, the emperor, built new constructions for all the North  Italy. In Verona where the old republican walls were in disuse, was built with recyclable materials a new wall. In this belt were included also the big amphitheatre and a fortress which hosted the gladiator barrack. Due to the terrible earthquake in 1117 the walls of Gallieno felt down with the outside ring of the Arena, the Roman Theatre and others monuments. About Walls of Gallieno nowadays we can admire only a part of the homonym square and there are some recognisable parts inside the private houses on the left of Via Leoncino.
